PORT ST. LUCIE, FL – As the official solid waste service provider for Saint Lucie County for more than 10 years, Waste Pro is proud to have partnered with a group of more than 300 volunteers from the community to renovate the home of Gold Star parents, Clay and Linda Schumann.
“When I contacted Waste Pro about this project, the first thing they told me was, ‘whatever you need we’ll get it to you,’” said Joel Dramis, City of Port St. Lucie Building Department Official. “We appreciate their hard work in helping us show love and support for our heroes.”
Waste Pro provided a dumpster free of charge to assist the volunteers in maintaining the cleanliness of the Schumanns’ neighborhood as they stripped their house. Employees also collected construction and demolition debris on-site throughout the completion of the project.
“These volunteers work tirelessly to honor Gold Star families for the sacrifices that their loved ones have made for our county,” said Waste Pro of Fort Pierce Division Manager, Darlene McLaughlin. “Our team is excited to be part of this project and to support them in any way that we can.”
The Schumanns had begun renovations in 2011, but their home improvement efforts were halted when they received a call informing them that their son, U.S. Army SPC Jordan Schumann, had been killed in Afghanistan.
Five years later, their neighbors along with local contractors and community partners decided to team up and finish the job while the Schumanns vacationed on West Palm Beach.
On the night of August 7th, when the Schumanns came back to their home, the volunteers surprised them with new bathrooms, flooring, drywall as well as a new deck. “I didn’t expect this,” says Clay Schumann. “It really touched my heart and reinforced how important it is for us to be a community.”
